Why I keep a bullet journal

When I don’t write things down, my days feel like they’re spinning. There is always too much to do, and all of it feels urgent at once.

A bullet journal fixes that for me. Every task, plan and loose thought gets a place on the page. Once it’s written down, I stop carrying it around in my head. I can breathe. I can see today, and I can see the months ahead.

Some of what changed surprised me. I keep up with friends and family more. I help my wife more around the house. I make more time for fun, and I get more done at work. Having a place to process everything changes how the rest of the day goes.

I built Shizuten so I could keep that system in the browser I already have open all day.

How bullet journaling works

A bullet journal is one notebook for your tasks, plans and notes. Ryder Carroll, a designer, created the method to organize his own days. Many people now keep one on paper.

You write short lines and mark each one with a symbol: a dot for a task, a circle for an event, a dash for a note. At the end of the day, you look back. Finished tasks get an ×. Unfinished tasks move to a new day, or you cross them out because they no longer matter.

That short review each evening is what keeps your head clear. Shizuten keeps the method the way it works on paper, and it builds the index and copies tasks forward for you.
